Operating primarily in the Outer Rim territories, the Crimson Mask is a ruthless band of pirates that have been in existence for over a decade.
Rumor has it that the organization was started by a starship captain named Voerrik Gauunt. Gauunt was captain of a Corellian Corvette that was responsible for maintaining planetary security around a tiny planet called Tob-Zahs 80. When he was relieved of his duty to make room for the new Captain, a young upstart who "just happened" to be related to a planetary senator, Gauunt exploded in rage.

Relying on his faithful crew not to mutiny, the disgruntled captain shot the new officer and resumed control of "The Brilliant Dawn". Before anyone knew what had happened, Gauunt was gone, and with him, his ship and crew of several hundred loyal crewmembers.
Gauunt utilized the power and influence he gained throughout the many years piloting the space lanes. Calling upon his many contacts and associates, he acquired false registration for his ship, and he and his crew set up shop on a small abandoned space station in the Kreigess Asteroid belt. Soon after, he and his crew began to hit large luxury yachts and corporate freighters hauling everything from precious stones to spare starship parts.

Gauunt, always a visionary with one eye turned towards the future, began to formulate a plan. He took several of his most gifted and ruthless pirates, quietly injecting them into numerous major criminal organizations and as crew members on various corporate freighters. Using these men as moles, Gauunt gained info that allowed him to meticulously and thoroughly plan every attack and get away before anyone knew what had happened or who had struck.

Years went by and the Crimson Mask experienced moderate success. Using various black markets on Celanon and Nar Shadda, Gauunt was eventually able to equip his team with a small compliment of Y-Wings and Z-95 starfighters.
The Crimson Mask's reputation had grown as well. Many former pirates and lowlifes heard about the success of the 'Mask, and wanted in on the action. Gauunt was happy to open is organization up to new members, but those who crossed him soon learned of his no-nonsense policy. Rumor has it that shortly after a mission in which several newer members challenged his authority, Gauunt had the men strapped to the hull of one of his starfighters and shot into space, where the men were incinerated in the atmosphere. There was no more talk of mutiny after that demonstration.

During a scouting mission, Gauunt was unexpectedly killed. This came as a complete shock to every member of the organization, who looked to the man as a leader and father-figure. The story went that he and several of his inner circle officers had been scouting out a small moon as a possible base. The team had been set upon by ferocious woodland creatures and Gauunt had sacrificed himself while the group fled to safety.
The truth is that Gaunt's death was an elaborate lie. The man had grown weary of the pirating lifestyle and wanted to retire to spend time with a son he had fathered in another sector. Gauunt feared his pirating exploits would follow him the rest of his life, and felt that faking his own demise was the only sure way he would find peace. He gradually taught his second-in-command, a pirate by the name of Cleft Dewaal, everything he needed to know to Head-up the Crimson Mask.

Upon the news of Gauunts death, the rest of the organization accepted Dewaal as the leader of the 'Mask, and the organization entered into a new era of prosperity. Little did Dewaal realize however, that the Crimson Mask was being closely observed by another individual-Sablaa the Hutt, a vile crime-lord on the nearby planet of Shelvic II in the Seloric sector.
Sablaa had been watching the organization for some time, and had gone to the trouble of injecting her own spies into the organization. For several years these sleeper agents observed Dewaal and his methods, reporting back to Sablaa any weakness they spotted in the young pirate.

With Dewaal feeding off of his newfound power, several years passed and the Crimson Mask began to feed of of their bloodthirsty reputation. The more ships that were raided, the more violent Dewaal grew. Very few conquests ended without scores of people dying or being taken prisoner. It was at this point that Dewaal, now known by the pirates as "Boss D" began to sell his prisoners into slavery, further augmenting the organizations coffers.
To say Sablaa was impressed was an understatement. The Hutt had planned on taking over the 'Mask and placing one of her own spies as it's leader, but in Dewaal Sablaa saw the best of both worlds. With him, he would be able to keep the loyalty of the pirate group AND spread violence and fear throughout her corner of the galaxy.

A meeting was established and Dewaal, realizing that it would be in his best interests to go along with the Hutt, agreed to the "merger". The young pirate wasn't stupid, and a temporary alliance with the Hutt would give him time to formulate a plan that would free them from the Hutt's clutches.
Soon the Crimson mask was supplied with new equipment along with 15 new JF-39 Starfighters. The pirates were happy, and most importantly, Sablaa was happy.

Force Resistance: Hutts have an innate defense against Force-based mind manipulation techniques and roll double their Perception dice to resist such attacks. However, because of this, Hutts are not believed to be able to learn Force skills.

Story Factors:
Reputation: Hutts are almost universally despised, even by those who find themselves benefitting from the Hutt's activities. Were it not for the ring of protection with which the Hutts surround themselves, they would surely be exterminated within a few years.
Self-centered: Hutts cannot look "beyond themselves" (or their offspring or parents) in their considerations. However, because they are master manipulators, they can compromise - "I'll give him what he wants to get what I want." They cannot be philanthropic without ulterior motives.

This prosperity was not to last however. While Dewaal grew more and more vicious, a small faction within the Crimson mask began to grow weary of the endless murdering of innocents. Seeing piracy as an activity that could best be accomplished without slaughter to innocent spacers, several members of the 'Mask rose up in opposition to Dewaal.
Among these were a husband and wife Wroonian team and a lifelong Crimson Mask pirate,a devornian named Skorvic. Using lies and deceit, Skorvic planted evidence that Dewaal was secretly working with the local sector rangers and was planning to turn in the organization for amnesty and an undisclosed amount of credits.

Dewaal vehemently protested the evidence, but his power base had been wavering for some time and he was set upon by his own assistants (who Skorvic promised a healthy sum of credits to) and killed. Skorvic, seeing only part of the problem solved, then approached Sablaa the Hutt.
Skorvic leveled with the crime lord, explaining Dewaal's weakening base and lack of control in the organization. He guaranteed increased profits and recruitment, something that Dewaal had not concerned himself with during his period as the Crimson Mask leader.
Sablaa told Skorivc that he had exactly five years to shape up the 'Mask, or else he and his Wroonian counterparts would wind up as snacks for her pit or Rodian Svapers. The Dervornian agreed to the terms and returned to Jordal and Meleeza, his Wroonian partners, and set the deal before them. There was little to do but accept what the Hutt had to offer.

The first two years under the trio's command proved to be an industrious time. The organization flourished and gained notoriety as a safe haven and worthwhile "investment" for any ostracized spacer who society had turned its back on (am image Skorvic endorsed by word of mouth and outright recruitment of spacers, smugglers and the like). It was during this period that the 'Mask gained more fame than they had ever experienced, with pilots such as Lady Suicide and others joining their ranks.
It was also during this period that Skorvic recruited what was to be the most prolific Crimson Mask member in the organizations history-a young pilot by the name of Geo Krellin.
Krellin was a former rebellion pilot who carried with him a reputation as a fearless warrior...and out-of-control drunkard.
Krellin never completely shook this image, and was excommunicated by the rebellion high command when, in a spice induced frenzy, fired upon a Rebellion Mon Cal light freighter. The ship suffered little damage, but the action caused Krellin's immediate dismissal.

Skorvic had heard of the young pilots exploits, and sought him out, tracking the young Correllian down on a planet called Aquanuric VII. With a promise of untold riches and respect, the dervornian convinced Krellin to join the Crimson Mask as the lead fighter pilot in one of the 'Masks squadrons; an action that acquired the organization one of the best pilots in the galaxy(when he was sober).

It was shortly after Krellins initiation that word made it to Skorvic that Sablaa the Hutt had met with an untimely demise. Rumor stated that the Hutt had grown ambitious and was looking into expanding his area of influence to other worlds outside of the Seloric Sector. This took the Hutt to several planets, where he proceeded to strike deals and establish business associates.
One of these planets was Alderaan. Unfortunately for the Hutt, this was at the same time that the Empire decided to make an example of the planet, and Sablaa, along with every other sentient on the planet, was annihilated.

Infighting then began among Sablaa's associates on Shelvic II, throwing the underworld into chaos. Skorvic took this opportunity to eliminate Sablaa's people from the organization (of which there were only a few left). Amid the unrest the Crimson Mask disappeared, relocating to another sector and setting up base inside an inert volcano on a planet in the outer rim.The planet was designated LZ-912 and was uninhabited, save for indigenous creatures and wildlife.

Skorvic saw the relocation as a rebirth and believed it held a wealth of opportunity for the organization. They could now vary their routines and undertake more lucrative targets, without having to cut in a greedy Hutt crime lord.
Prosperity reigned once again, with the Crimson Mask wrecking havoc throughout space; the members grew to enjoy the new base and Skorvic felt as though the 'Mask was as formidable as they had been since the days of Voerrick Gauunt.

It was also around this time that Skorvic and Melezza began a torrid affair behind the back of her husband Jordal.
Both had been spending an unusual amount of time together in planning a major heist of a Corellian pleasure yacht. The reported take was to be upwards of 8 million credits, a sum that would have acquired the 'Mask a slew of new starfighters, which they were now in need of.
The romance blossomed while Jordal was away on a recruitment assignment. with Skorvic and Meleeza attempting to keep it from the other members of the organization.

While Jordal was abroad, he received a holovid recording of Skorvic and Meleeza together. The evidence infuriated the man, and slowly, in the back of his mind a plan began to form.
Upon his return and acting as nothing were different, Jordal arranged for an elaborate dinner to be set, a feast that he told everyone was well deserved.
As a number of pirates and Crimson Mask "inner circle" dined, Jordal sat back and watched Melezza and Skorvic steal glances at each other from across the table. Finally, at the end of dinner, Jordal rolled out a keg of Corellian Brandy, aged for over a millenia. He opened the spout and poured, requesting that everyone wait for a very special toast.
The aroma of brandy drifted throughout the great dining area carved from volcanic rock and Jordal raised his glass. He toasted their great leader Skorvic and his beautiful wife Meleeza, and toasted to the prosperity of the Crimson mask. The drink dissappeard in an instant, with over thirty 'Mask members demanding more. Jordal served this up with relish, pouring seconds and thirds for the rowdy group.
When the keg was tapped, Jordal slapped his head and exclaimed that he forgot one last toast. "I forgot to toast trust! because after all, without that we are nothing!" he said, casting a dark stare at Skorvic and Melezza. The dervornian, realizing that Jordal knew what was going on, made to stand and challenge the large wroonian, but found that his legs wouldn't work.
He called for some of the other pirates to seize Jordal, but no one moved, they just sat where they were, casting nervous glances around the room.
"It's called Lendrinal, and can only be found in the reproductive glands of Rodian flandraks...one drop is enough to paralyze a man inside of a day and kill him with unexplainable pain and suffering...everyone here has had about a glass apiece."

When the remainder of the Crimson Mask realized what had happened, unrest gripped the pilots and many planned to flee the base, taking with them what they could.
It was at this point that two Mon Cal Cruisers set down on LZ-912. The pirates were stunned as a Mon Calamarian, riding shotgun in a jet black speeder, made his way into the volcanic hideout, bypassing the surprised security detail.
The Mon Cal pronounced himself as Commander Targac, and informed the collective that it was he who fed Jordal the information that resulted in the massacre of the Crimson Mask command chain.
"Put your trust in me, and we will once again be great," he told the pirates. Members exchanged glances, and one by one, they agreed to Targac's leadership, having seen firsthand the downfall of the 'Mask due to treachery and lust.

Targac took control of the organization, appointing many current Crimson Mask members to his command team. What he did not tell the rest of the organization is that these were the same members who were his "sleeper" agents that he had in place for years, awaiting a weakness in Skorvic's leadership. Targac later revealed that he was a former officer on Gen. Ackbars strike cruiser during the battle of Endor; he became disinchanted with the rebellion and fled when he realized that Ackbar was on a collision course with provisional council member Borsk Fey'La, and chose not to go down with Ackbar.
